Community Walk & Celebration

Siuslaw Public Library is participating in a two-year study with Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) to promote walking in the community. We are creating a local walking map with assistance from City of Florence, and we will hold a free community walk for all ages on Sunday, April 28, 2024, 1-3 PM at Miller Park.

Our group received a grant from OHSU to promote or improve walking in the community. Each library group gets to choose and implement their own project. Twenty rural libraries from around Oregon were selected for the program, and each library recruited a group of community members to participate in the study. Each group walks weekly, and half the libraries (including ours) were chosen to do a "Change Club" curriculum and project in addition to the weekly walk.

Paddleboard Activities
are tentatively being planned for either Saturday after the PlayShop or on Sunday.

Paddling

Post PlayShop Paddle

As a follow up to the Siuslaw Playshop, the Florence Oregon Area Kayakers are hosting a paddle launching from East Woahink Lake boat ramp on Sunday, April 28, 2024 (weather permitting). This is a group paddle experience for up to 3 groups (or “pods”) of up to ten people per pod. You’ll bring all of your own equipment. Our friendly, helpful folks will lead the paddle and answer questions to help apply
some of what you learned at the PlayShop!

Registration for the April 28 paddle will take place at the Florence Oregon Area Kayakers table at the Siuslaw Playshop at the Florence Event Center on April 27. We’ll set out in pods of 8-10 paddlers who’ll stick together, following their pod leader during the 2-hour(ish) paddle. East Woahink Boat Launch is a beautiful location with ample parking, but to prevent bottlenecks at the launch, we’re asking people to register for load/launch windows. “Loading” means getting boats and gear dropped off and set up, and “launching” means having all boats in the water. There are no parking or launch fees at Woahink!

You’ll sign up for Pod A—Load at 9:00, launch by 9:30; Pod B—Load at 9:30 am, launch by 10:00, Pod C—Load at 10:00 am, launch by 10:30 during the PlayShop. Everyone participating should be in good enough physical condition to carry their own boats and gear. Helping other paddlers with their boats and gear always brings smiles.

We will launch and land boats ONLY at the right-hand boat launch as you face the lake. The active loading area is circled in red. [See image below].

Early arrivals may drop boats off on the grass OUTSIDE of the active loading area. Paddlers will be responsible for their own safety. FOAK
paddlers always wear our Personal Flotation Devices. We’ll also practice good boat ramp etiquette (i.e. not parking on the boat ramp) to help everyone have a great day. Volunteers will be on site by 8:30 a.m. to help direct set up.

We’ll make announcements regarding weather or other changes during the PlayShop on April 27. For more information, contact jenniferyocum@gmail.com
